About Lake Avenue Restaurant & Bar

Our Logo

A rowboat, beautiful in its simplicity, faded from the sun and filled with memories of quiet days spent at the cabin and peaceful paddling across familiar waters. It symbolizes that romantic moment when you feel closest to your partner & your surroundings, and serves as a reminder to row a little slower.

The silhouette of the bottle speaks to our knowledge and appreciation for the delicate variations that arise when passion and creativity are infused in the production process. The slight rippling of the water reminds us that each action we take produces a response from nature, and only in that cooperation with our resources will we achieve success.

We believe in using animals and produce that have been cared for in a way that reflects our respect for creating food for your table.

You can enjoy every bite, and every sip, knowing each ingredient has been artfully selected for its flavor and integrity to shape your dining experience.

Our Story

Lake Avenue opened its doors in 1991 when Canal Park was more 'scruffy post-industrial harbor' than 'tourist destination. Setting up in a renovated mattress factory, founders Tom Benson and Wendy Rouse were among the first to introduce Duluth to new recipes and combinations that challenged the area's more traditional establishments.

The restaurant was passed on to sous chef Patrick Cross and his wife Mary Ann Immerfall, who continued to further Lake Avenue's reputation as a foundation of Canal Park dining as the area saw the opening of many new restaurants.

Derek Snyder, Mark Swenson and Michael Schraepfer realized a lifelong dream when they purchased Lake Avenue in 2009. They built new tables, booths, and a bar out of reclaimed lumber, opened outdoor deck dining, and extended its hours. They introduced catering, live music, and a music festival over the marathon weekend in June.

Laura Haack is the most recent co-owner. She was a server for years at Lake Ave, and wanted to join the growing establishment and assist in the mission to source & celebrate local produce. You’ll often see owners Derek, Mark, and Laura in the front of house waiting on tables and assisting in smooth service. Their dedication and passion is eminent in the restaurant.

Lake Avenue continues to focus on locavore cuisine, Midwestern spirits, and varietal wine. We support the creativity of our staff and local community. We encourage patrons to take their time dining with us, to explore their palettes, and to try something new. As Canal Park continues to develop and grow, Lake Avenue plans to be a friendly, dynamic dining destination for many years to come.

We thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy!
